The tiger barb is a very playful and energetic tank mates. They are very fun to watch swimming back and forth in the tank so a longer tank is much preferred over a tall one. Tiger barbs are a schooling fish so they should at minimum be kept in groups of 3 but prefer larger groups of around 6 or more if at all possible. Be careful with more delicate tank mates such as slow moving or long finned fish being housed with tiger barbs. Barbs in general, tend to be fin nippers and will often kill such fish such as fancy tailed guppies and neon tetras. Barbs will eat a variety of foods. A high-quality omnivore flake food, frozen spirulina enriched brine shrimp, and blood worms once a week is a good feeding regiment for tiger barbs.
